Hoop Marksmen

Unable to function to perfection with only two veterans back from last year's squad, Peekskill High School's Red Devil quintet won seven games and lost ten in basketball this year.

Even though the Peekskillites didn't win the championship this year, their schoolmates have reason to be proud of them. For the second year in succession the Red Devils were awarded the sportsmanship placque given by the Hudson River League officials, an honor only given to the school that supports a team which is known for their clean playing and sportsmanship.

The George Peterson-coached combine won four of their ten Hudson River League games and tied for third place with Washington Irving in the final standings. The locals defeated Ossining twice and held victories over Washington Irving and Pleasantville. They lost games to the championship North Tarrytown quintet and also were taken over twice by the secondplace Hastings contingent. In the final two games of the season they lost return games to Pleasantville and Hastings.

In the nonleague tilts they beat New Rochelle, Tuckahoe and the Peekskill. Service Battery. They were defeated by Beacon, A. B. Davis, The Alumni and Ben Franklyn. The latter game was played at Madison square Garden and was broadcast over the radio.

Those on this year's squad were: Captain Joe Bittal, Caleb Peterson, Glen Jessup, Charles McGinnis, Mike Mitch, Ed Conley,
Bud McCann, Alex DeMeo, John Jackson, Charles Bolden, Victor Rossi and Roy Lent.
Conley, Jessup, McCann, and DeMeo will be back for next year's team.

Best In The League

For the first time since the 1934 season Coach George V. Hall was able to turn out a championship Hudson River League junior varsity basketball team. With five of his veterans back, he worked wonders and put one of his finest teams on the court. The champions scored an average of twenty five points per game to their opponents fifteen. Percy Peterson led the victors in scoring honors with seventy nine points. The jayvees lost but one game out of fourteen tries and went on to win the league title easily.

The victors received the first trophy ever given to a championship junior varsity team. A word of praise goes to Coach George V. Hall whose patience and coaching ability has again brought honor to the portals of P. H. S.

Cinder Champions

Once again Peekskill's Crimson Blue banners were sent flying into the air as the Red Devil cindermen rose to spectacular heights to capture the 1937 Hudson River League track meet and maintain their longexisting supremacy of the cinders.

Handicapped by last year's graduation and by the unfortunate absence of Coach George Peterson, the P. H. S. squad, composed chiefly of first year men, lost the first meet of the season to Newburgh in a very close and thrilling duel. Gradually becoming more and more experienced, the locals gained splendid victories over such strong competitors as North Tarrytown and A. B. Davis.

Out of the first year candidates who answered the track call sprang such stars as Doug Anderson, Bud Pugsley and Tom Brown. Dominating all the quarter milers, Anderson not only refused to be beaten but ran the second fastest 440 ever to be run on the Depew Park track. Broad jumping, high jumping and pole vaulting his way to fame, Bud Pugsley has more than earned his spurs as a first year letterman. Dave Gardner was only a ninth grader this year but a grand trackman. His art was high jumping. Above all stand sportsmen, Leroy Lent, veteran dash man, and Wally Schweitzer, league champion shot putter.

Friends of France

Organized over eleven years ago, the French Club has again ended (a fruitful and profitable year. Students wishing to acquire a more cultural background than the average classroom period affords have eagerly added their names to the ever growing list of French enthusiasts. Their aim is to enjoy a better knowledge of France and its people. The club holds bimonthly meetings, with all important business being conducted in French.

Accompanied by their adviser, Miss Sarah T. Baker, about twenty three members made a delightful trip to New York City. The students dined at a French restaurant and later witnessed a French movie.

The officers of the club were: Fernand Lapointe, president; Grace Black, vice president; and Natalie Tompkins, secretary.

Il Circolo Italiano

Once again the Italian Club, under the direction of Ferdinand Gagliardi, has completed a very successful year. Although the club has existed only three years, it is one of the finest. This club is comprised of thirty members and meets every Wednesday. It presents an opportunity for members to learn to speak Italian more fluently and also creates an enthusiasm about the language.

This year the club presented two oneact plays. These plays were performed in order that the Italian public might observe the progress of the students in Italian. The proceeds helped pay the expenses of a trip to New York.

The officers of the club are: William Lamondo, president; Lewis Tronto, vice president; Antoinette DiTerlizzi, secretary; and Adelaide Clemente, treasurer.

Friends of the Needy

Continuing to mark up one good deed after another, The Social Service Club, guided by Miss Cora Meserve, has indeed a long list to show. All through the school year the girls have done their best to aid the needy of Peekskill.

The season started with scrapbook making. This was followed by Sacrifice Week, during which all students were asked to contribute a few pennies to the club. Not yet satisfied with their accomplishments, the club gave toys away at Christmas and worked on baby clothes supplied by the Welfare Station.

With Priscilla Travis as president; Rosalie Carpenter, vicepresident; Priscilla Lane, treasurer; and Effie Bannister, secretary; the Social Service Club has had a brilliant season.
