THE CLASSES OF 1957 and 1958 held their class reunion, combined 49nth and 50th last weekend at Overlook Lodge in Bear Mountain. The weekend started with a visit to our old school on Ringgold St., Friday at 5 PM. then they moved to Piazzi Roma for an evening of catching up and a very good dinner. Forty five people were expected but over 70 showed. A huge success. Marie and I got there late due to heavy traffic in New jersey (a very common malady there these days). We did have a very nice time seeing all of our friends and renewing some old ones acquaintances.
The Overlook lodge was old but neat and clean and relatively comfortable. We stayed at the main lodge. The view of the River from just above Roa Hook to the Con Ed plant was astounding once the morning fog lifted.
Saturday night was one of the best reunions I have ever been to. A cocktail hour was held from 6:30 to 7:30. There was a lot of mingling among classmates and friends and everyone was busy rushing from one to another. Many hugs were given in greeting.
Sandy Poritsky opened the event with a welcome. On the wall behind him was a wonderful display of pictures of the classes that was set up and displayed by Bob Barthelmes. Yours truly had snuck up to his room to change into my normal school attire of 1958, blue jeans, a white tee shirt with sleeves rolled up around a pack of cigarettes and black high top sneakers. I began with "What's Buzzin , Cousin." . I talked about the places, people and activities that had created our memories. That was followed by dinner and dancing. I believe everyone left with a sense of renewal and thorough enjoyment. Many new contacts were made that will be kept going for years.
One of the fun highlights of the evening was a game led by Bob Barthelmes (57) and June Conklin Monroe (58) where you had to match the people in row A to the people in row B. Class of 57 had to match who took who to the Prom and 58 to the Commencement Dance. The prizes were a picture of the old school, framed and ready to hang.
Sundays picnic at the waterfront was another highlight and an opportunity for more catching up and plan making for individual reunions to come. Steve Martin was at the picnic Sunday and looked well. He was a highlight of the event and eased the concerns of many about his long health struggle.
A great time was had by all and there were many joyous goodbyes as we left Sunday to return home.
Hope all is well and that all are still in the state of renewed enjoyment of their fellow Peekskillites. It is an important part of all our lives.
